Lamu leaders ask State to arm police reservists

Gunmen last week raided Mpeketoni area where two attacks left 60 people dead

Leaders from Lamu County now want the government to arm reservists in the area to protect locals from continued butchering.

The leaders say security officers have been overwhelmed by the attackers and its time locals are empowered to protect themselves.

Their sentiments came even as Tana River governor Hussein Dado called for a stop to killing of innocent Kenyans in the coastal town.

They said the manner  in which the locals are being attacked is a clear indication that security forces have been overwhelmed.

Tana River  governor Hussein Dado said  residents are  raising concern  over the  lack of transparency on the findings of the Justice Grace Nzioka led commission over the wanton killings that have claimed over  200 lives since last year.

He called on the government to carry out thorough investigations in the Mpeketoni attack, which he alleged locals must have been involved  in carrying out the massacre that led to the death of  innocent Kenyans.

Dado further called on the Cord leadership to respect the rule of law and instead engage the country and the government in constructive dialogue.

Ethnicity

Meanwhile, Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir wants Mombasa residents to stop using inflammatory remarks that might ignite ethnic passions.

Nassir said for Kenyans to fight insecurity the country must unite together irrespective of their tribal or political affiliations.

Insecurity in the Kenyan coast is a worry to the nation currently.

The tourism industry that was once a booming lifeline of the region is on its knees.

The recent massacre of Mpeketoni residents has even made matters worse  in the Coastal region.

Abdulswamad said Coast is a cosmopolitan area and locals need to embrace each other and use their divergence to develop the area.

The legislator said though he is in ODM he would support the government in ensuring security for all citizens and decried the insinuation that he is being compromised to betray the ideals of his party.
