Five suspected members of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) have been arrested and several crude weapons recovered in Kaya Chonyi and Jibana forests in Kilifi County.

The arrests were made in an ongoing operation to maintain peace ahead of the Saba Saba rally planned for Monday at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

Addressing the press outside his office Friday where he displayed the assortment of weaponry including pangas, machetes, homemade guns, reading books and registers for recruited members, Kilifi County commissioner Albert Kobia Kamau said the operation will go on until all members the illegal groupings are brought to book.

He said while some suspected members escaped arrest, intelligence reports reveal that there are at least 1000 recruits undergoing training in the forests.

Kobia said security agencies were still pursuing those who escaped while the five arrested will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
