Leaders and professionals meet over mining in Kitui

The Kitui County leaders and professionals will meet on Friday at Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI/JIKA) Kitui to deliberate on pertinent issues relating to the status of mineral exploration and mining in the County.

The meeting convened by the Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe will also develop a proactive mechanism on the on-going policy and legislation process of the County mining in the County.

This comes at a time when a number of prospective investors have shown interest in the exploration and mining of some of the industrial minerals especially coal, limestone and iron ore.

According to a letter sent to all the invitees the meeting will review the present status on the emerging issues on land ownership, lease compensation and resettlement.

Dr Malombe has convened the meeting to discuss the challenges facing the planned mining in the county and to come up with solutions on way forward.

The meeting will also discuss the Community Land bill 2014 and the Mining Bill 2014 particularly on issues of concern and interest to the county.

The meeting will deliberate on the engagement framework to secure the local communities interests, locals’ stake holding in mining and the proposals pertaining to the Community Land Bill 2014 and the Mining Bill 2014.

The meeting will comprise of Mps, Members of the Kitui County Assembly, professionals, community leaders, Non-Governmental organisations, religious leaders and ordinary wananchi.
