Artisanal miners in Vihiga County to be adequately equipped

Vihiga County Government is partnering with the Ministry of Mining to equip artisanal gold miners in the county.

The move comes in the face of fatalities that have been occurring due to poor equipment and working environment that endangers the lives of the miners.

Artisanal mining in parts of Vihiga County has been a main source of livelihood for most residents who use rudimentary equipment.

The recent death of four people in mining sites in the county has got the Vihiga County government working towards equipping the miners with better machines and technology to aid them ply their trade safely.

While addressing the public at one of the sites, Vihiga Women Representative Dorcas Kedogo expressed concern over the safety of the miners calling for urgent need to equip them.

Kedogo urged the miners to form SACCOs so as to able to acquire credit to improve their working conditions and also gain a saving culture for self development as well as reduce cases of exploitation from middlemen.

The county government is in talks with Mining Cabinet Secretary Duncan Kazungu on modalities aimed at assisting the artisanal miners in the area.

The Cabinet Secretary is also expected to tour the mining sites.
