Police confirmed the device was a bomb

Bomb experts have detonated a Russian made grenade discovered at a flat in Likoni sending locals into panic.

The device was discovered by curious residents who noticed a suspicious object abandoned in their neighborhood.

Police arrived at the scene and confirmed the device was an explosive device. They have since launched a manhunt to track the suspects believed to have planted the device.

Vigilance has been intensified in Mombasa and Lamu counties following a wave of insecurity in the region resulting in the death of close to 100 people.

It is following the alertness of Wananchi that security officers managed to secure Likoni flats after the public discovered an explosive device planted in the building.

After alerting the police, officers who arrived at the scene confirm the gadget found abandoned was a Russian made M77 grenade with the potential to cause a massive explosion.

According to Likoni OCPD Robert Muriithi, police are following crucial leads to ascertain how and when the bomb was planted in the residential area.

It took more than four hours for the Kenya navy bomb experts to detonate the grenade after the first attempt failed.

Police presence was high with the GSU ensuring curious onlookers were kept at bay.

In state house Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta held a lengthy meeting with leaders from neighbouring  Kwale where he outlined a raft of measures to combat insecurity in the region.

The President met all Members of Parliament from Kwale together with Governor Salim Mvurya and Senator Boy Juma Boy.
