Coffee farmers from the Eastern region have called for the full implementation of the Coffee Taskforce Report which has already been forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Led by Meru Coffee Millers chairman Zablon Baabu the farmers are now calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to roll out plan of creating awareness of the Coffee Taskforce Report.

The farmers said they were optimistic that once the report is fully implemented the coffee farmers across the country will benefit.

Baabu deferred with the position taken by the Council of Governors and a few farmers from Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties who had given a contrary opinion on the report.

“Cartels and rogue marketers in the coffee sector are opposed to the proposed recommendations by the task force and want to continue taking advantage of the coffee farmers,” said Baabu.

Baabu pleaded with the Council of Governors and some coffee farmers who had moved to court to withdraw the court case in the interest of the farmers.

“Let everybody in the coffee sector embrace dialogue with all the stakeholders to ensure that contentious issues in the report are mended in order to improve coffee farming in the country,” said Baabu.

Vice Chairman of Lower Eastern Millers Association Patrick Kitele called on all Kenyans to support the implementation of the report noting that farmers stand to benefit more.
