Potato farmers in Nyandarua County can now sell their produce via a digital platform.
This is after the farmers signed a pact with OLX marketing company that will link them with potential buyers within a click of a button on their cellphone.
The company has put an SMS platform that the farmers will use to connect to possible buyers .
This message is then received by OLX who reach out to the farmers and links them to the consumers through their agents on the ground.
According to OLX company Country Manager Peter Ndiangui, the move will get rid of middlemen who have for a long time exploited farmers.
He noted that the SMS system makes it easy for farmers without smartphones access the services and get ready market for their produce unlike the other services offered by the company.
Ndiangui pointed that the company offers free transport services from the farms to the buyers thereby minimizing the hectic work the farmers go through to deliver their produce to the market.
He spoke in Ol Kalou town today where the signed the pact with the over 300 farmers.
Ndiangui noted that the company would also offer training services to the farmers so that they could improve on their quality and production.
Nyandarua Potato Growers Association Chairman Patrick Kagwanja welcomed the move saying that it would go along way in minimizing the losses they incurred through middlemen.
He urged the government to also consider having the produce be sold in 50 kilogram bags as per the law.
