Mrs Gathoni Koinange, the widow of the late colonial-era Chief Koinange wa Mbiyu, died last week at the age of 117.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned Mrs Elizabeth Gathoni Koinange, commending her resilience in the struggle for the country’s independence.

President Kenyatta noted that Mama Gathoni, together with other liberation icons, made personal sacrifices towards independence and her death is a big loss to the entire country.

“We will remember Mama Gathoni as a selfless and dedicated person who devoted the prime of her life to the service of our nation. Her devotion to our national cause and values will forever remain etched in our minds. We will particularly remain grateful for the crucial role she played in our independence struggle,” President Kenyatta said.

Mrs Gathoni Koinange, the widow of the late colonial-era Chief Koinange wa Mbiyu, died last week at the age of 117.

“At this moment of sorrow and grief, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Chief Koinange’s family, relatives and friends,” the President said in a condolence message.

The President prayed to God to grant Mama Gathoni’s family the strength and courage to bear this loss.
