Enhance security in Baringo to curb cattle rustling govt urged

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi says commercial interests are to blame for the increased cases of cattle rustling and insecurity in Baringo County.

Speaking while appearing before the Parliamentary committee on Equal Opportunities and National Cohesion, Cheboi said there is need to deploy Kenya police reservists to the region to help in disarming communities.

Cheboi however urged the government to enhance security in the county to curb cattle rustling and inter-community wars.

He said cattle theft should be treated as robbery with violence adding that commercial interests is a major cause of insecurity in the county.

Leaders who accompanied the governor said there is need to address boundary disputes in the county to end inter-community wars.

Cheboi said raiders are armed with sophisticated weapons adding that several schools and other institutions have remained closed due to insecurity.

The committee chairman Johnson Sakaja said the committee will tour the county to conduct hearings in the affected areas.
