Five-place grid penalty for Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton will start the German Grand Prix from no higher than 20th on the grid following a five-place penalty for changing his gearbox.
The part was damaged in the Mercedes driver’s crash in qualifying, which was caused by a brake failure.
It remains likely that Hamilton will have to start from the pit lane.
Mercedes said on Saturday they would likely change the type of brakes used on the car because of the difficulty of working out why it had failed.
F1′s parc ferme regulations dictate that teams cannot change the specifications of their cars from qualifying to race unless it is on safety grounds.
But governing body the FIA faces a difficult decision in letting any change go through on that basis as several other teams are using the same brakes as Hamilton without reporting any problems.
