Flomena Cheych won Kenya her first gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games after she won the women’s marathon in Glasgow, Scotland.

Cheych and Caroline Kilel raced off from the leading pack and went shoulder to shoulder before Kilel faded on her endurance allowing Cheyech to take gold in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 45 seconds.

Kilel took silver in 2 hours, 27 minutes and 10 seconds while the bronze went to Jess Trengove of Australia.

The men’s race was tightly contested from the start and through the 1 hour mark with Stephen Chemlany looking to retain the gold Kenya won in Delhi in 2010.

But Australian Michael Shelley, boasting of home support, pulled away from the Kenyan to win in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 15 seconds as Chemlany took silver in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 58 seconds.

Uganda’s Abraham Kiplimo was third.
