It’s the end of the week, its Friday after all, not that it means anything since Friday comes every week. What it means, however, is that we get to cut loose and enjoy a few drinks with friends or simply enjoy one alone.

Whether you intend to spend the weekend indoors with friends or alone, you should at least know a few cocktail recipes to get you through the weekend.

On Thursday, we had the pleasure of joining other journalists at the Park Inn by Radisson in Westlands for a masterclass on Havana Club Rum cocktails organised by Pernod Ricard. There to take us through the history and the making of the famous Cuban rum and to provide a demonstration on just how to mix the ingredients just right was global brand ambassador Alfredo Guerra Fidalgo and Pavel Fernandez respectively.

The literal translation of Cuba Libre is ‘free Cuba’ referring to the American occupation of the island and its subsequent liberation. This particular Cuba Libre is not to be confused with the simple rum and coke combination. For this particular drink, use the Havana Club Especial and a generous amount of lime.

Arguably, Havana, Cuba is said to be the birthplace of the Mojito which uses white rum as a base. This is a popular cocktail that you can get at any local in town. For a Havana club mojito original use Havana Club Añejo 3 Años.

Floridita Frozen Daiquiri

The Floridita is a twist on the classic daiquiri. This cocktail was created at the popular Havana El Floridita where legend has it Ernest Hemingway was a frequent patron. The Floridita is a frozen drink created with a touch of cherry liqueur.
