Curtains fall on IAAF WU-18 championships

The 2017 IAAF world Under 18 athletics Championships comes to a close Sunday  at the Moi International sports center Kasarani after five days of tantalizing action.

Kenya hopes to bag more medals in the women’s 800 metres, boy’s 3000 metres, 2000 metres steeplechase and 4 by 400 metres mixed relay.

Lydia Cherutoh and Jackline Wambui will take part in the 800 metres finals while Edward Zakayo and Stanley Mburu tae to the field in the 3000 metres finals.

Leonard Kipkemoi and Cleophas Kandie will participate in the 2000 metres steeplechase while Mary Moraa, Gloria Mulei, Kelvin Sawe and David Sanayek will take part in the 4 by 400 metres mixed relay finals.

The 2017 Under 18 Athletics Championships will be the last one of the age bracket, after IAAF resolved to remove it from its Competitions Calendar.

On Saturday, Kenyan Dominic Samson clinched a bronze medal in the boys 10,000m walk race after finishing third position at the ongoing IAAF under 18 championships.

Samson clocked 41mins 25.78 secs while China’s Yao Zhang timed 41mins 12.01 secs to clinch a gold medal.

Salavat Ilkaev of Russia who was competing as a neutral athlete clinched a Silver medal after finishing in the second position timing 41mins 24.17 secs.

In the 5000m walk race for girls, Kenyan Leah Nanjala finished in the 14th position after clocking 25mins 23.97 secs.

The race was won by Glenda Morejon of Ecuador. In the 200m semis for boys, Kenyan Philemon Mopia finished in the fifth position clocking 21.79 secs.
