Aftershock continues to rattle Taiwan due to the strong earthquake that befell them.
The Powerful 6.4-magnitude tremor struck at 23:50 about 20km off the island’s east coast killing at least four people and injuring more than 220 others.
Residents in the city of Hualien have been told to stay away from their damaged homes and about 800 have taken shelter in community buildings.
Hualien is a popular tourist hub and a home to about 100,000 people, the earthquakes are not uncommon for residents in Hualien but the 6.4-magnitude quake has proven to be the strongest which came as a shock to them.
According to eye witnesses, residents were running out of buildings crying and screaming when the earthquake shock the city.
The damages from the earthquake are very severe; structures in the city have been tilted, debris being scattered all over and extensive damage of roads have been witnessed in the area.
Among the several damaged buildings was a hospital.
The emergency responders including soldiers, worked throughout the night, rescuing about 150 people from damaged buildings, but powerful aftershocks have disrupted their rescue efforts, the rescue team sent are still working to reach at least five other people who are known to be trapped in buildings and more than 140 people are still unaccounted for.
President Tsai Ing-wen was at the scene of the quake, he promised the victims of the quake that the government will help them to the best of their abilities.
