Kenya shines in men’s 3000 steeplechase in Morocco


Jairus Birech led a Kenyan 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase final at the ongoing 19th edition of the Africa Senior Athletics championships in Marakech Morocco.

Birech clocked 8 minutes, 34.79 seconds to win the second gold medal for Kenya ahead of Jonathan Ndiku who clocked 8 minutes, 37.67 seconds.

World champion Ezekiel Kemboi was third in 8 minutes, 39.30 seconds.

Hellen Obiri was outstanding in the women 1,500 metres winning gold in 4 minutes, 09.53 seconds.

She finished ahead of Ethiopia’s Dawit Biratu who won silver in 4 minutes, 10.92 seconds and Morocco’s Rabab Arafi who won bronze in 4 minutes, 12.08 seconds.

Kenya now has two gold medals, one silver and 5 bronze medals.
