Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has imported 70,000 metric tons of fertilizer for tea farmers in the country.
KTDA chairman, Peter Kanyago, said the fertilizer from Asia arrived in two shipments and the first one docked in Mombasa last week. He said the next shipment is expected in a few days time so that it can be distributed to farmers around the country.
Addressing the press at Ragati Tea Factory in Nyeri County after chairing a tea director’s meeting, Kanyago said the special compound fertilizer will help to improve the quality and quantity of tea.
He however said KTDA will ensure farmers get the right fertilizer with the right weight and instructed those packing it in Mombasa to ensure it is well packed.
Kanyago said a committee has been formed to look for new tea markets in Asian countries, Russia and USA to ensure farmers benefit more.
