Maize farmers to soon mill their own maize flour

Farmers could soon be able to mill their own maize flour with the introduction of a low cost self-service Posho Mill that is being showcased at the 4th University of Nairobi Innovation Week.

According to the innovator, Kipkoech Rotich, the Posho Mill, which is capable of milling using solar energy, would be crucial in areas where access to electricity is still a challenge.

Such innovations are being backed to aid in the achievement of the Big Four Agenda effectively and at much lower cost.

This year, one of the innovations that has attracted much attention is this self-service Posho Mill developed at Eldoret Polytechnique.

Similar to the ordinary Posho Mill that runs on diesel or electricity, a special module has been added here transforming it into a digital Posho Mill where a customer can operate individually provided they have inserted the required amount of money for a particular quantity.

This portable Posho Mill is expected to enable farmers and consumers mill their own maize flour as well as help in cutting down post-harvest losses on grains such as maize by facilitating conversion of grain to flour at a cheaper price.

When fully commercialized, it could cost at least Ksh 30,000 as developers look to incorporate mobile payment options incase cash is not available.

UoN Vice Chancellor Prof, Peter Mbithi says such platforms have been crucial in identifying talent.

Despite meager research and development budget which averages 0.8% of the GDP, the government is calling for private sector collaboration to aid in up-scaling promising innovations.

Some of the innovations showcased involved aquaculture, drone application in spraying fertilizer and pesticides, cost effective building techniques and food processing.
