Nyamira residents reject Ksh 5b water project

One person died in Nyamira County, while several others were left injured following a conflict over the construction of a mega water project in Nyamira and Kisii counties. 

In Nyamira County, residents are resisting commencement of the 5 billion shilling project funded by the National government claiming they were not consulted.

Bonyunyu dam is one of the Jubilee government’s flagship projects under implementation in Kisii, and that continues to generate friction from potential beneficiaries.

The irate residents barricaded a road leading to the site and wielded crude weapons to thwart ongoing works at the project site.

The confrontation turned ugly after a security officer allegedly shot dead a man and several others sustained injuries in the ensuing melee.

Attempts by implementing agencies including Lake Victoria South Water and Sanitation Services Company to start the project have faced hostility from the residents.

In Mavoko Sub County residents are ups in arms over what they claim is shoddy work done on a community dam meant to provide them with water.

The dam that was completed two years ago now remains a water pan that can hardly retain water. Irate residents say their hope for domestic water supply has remained a pipe dream.
