Nyeri Members of County Assembly have directed the county government to pay coffee farmers their dues within a week.

Led by the chair of the assembly’s select committee on agriculture Kibira Ngunyi, the MCAs issued an ultimatum to the agriculture executive of the county Shadrack Mubea to deliver the payments failure to that MCAs will convene a farmers meeting early next month to discuss the matter.

The coffee sub-sector has been going through a lot of challenges one been farmers not getting their pay on time due to mismanagement and corrupt practices within the sector.

During a stormy session in Nyeri, Members of the County Assembly questioned the county executive for agriculture Shadrack Mubea over Nyeri coffee farmers not getting their full pay after availing their coffee beans to be sold by the Nyeri County under the direct coffee sales program.

The MCAs questioned the basis of direct coffee marketing spearheaded by governor Nderitu Gachagua noting that the initiative has not been productive since farmers are still wallowing in poverty.

MCAs claimed that farmers who sold their produce under the joint marketing initiative were paid sh. 10 per kilogram yet those who opted out enjoyed payments of up to sh. 80 per kilo.

Mubea had a hard time defending the direct coffee marketing initiative with the MCAs putting him to task over 200,000 bags of coffee delivered to KPCU Sagana depot  a month ago yet no payments had been made.

According to a report which he tabled in the county assembly on 3rd of this month, the county government of Nyeri sold all the coffee that was milled at Sagana through the Nairobi auction, for sh 1.7 billion.

the MCAs threatened to congregate coffee farmers to discuss a way out if payments will not have been paid in full by the end of the month.
