Police probe businessman’s killing in Mombasa
Police have launched investigations into Friday night’s killing of Modern coast bus company owner Shaheed Bhat.
Bhat met his death after six gunmen sprayed his car with bullets along the Changamwe airport road.
His son who was in the vehicle with him, escaped with injuries.
A motor cycle operator who witnessed the incident said he saw the assailants’ vehicle block Bhat’s vehicle and then heard gunshots.
The witness said more than 6 masked people alighted from the vehicle and began shooting at Bhat’s vehicle.
A close friend of the deceased Salim Sumra said that he was heading for the 8pm prayers when he received a phone call that Bhat had been assassinated
Mombasa county police commandant Robert Kitur confirmed the incident saying Bhat was in the company of his son from the Moi International Airport when the unknown assailants sprayed his vehicle with bullets killing him on the spot while his son sustained injuries.
Kitur said that the police have not established the motive of the killing and are in hot pursuit of the assailants.
Kitur at the same time confirmed that there was no attack of the Changamwe police station situated less than a kilometer from the scene of crime.
Bhat had been accused of funding terrorism and was detained last year for questioning after police accused him of funding the radicalization of Muslim youth in Mombasa.
He was released on bond and was expected to appear in court next month.
