Kenya’s Raphael Obonyo has been named as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans during Africa Youth Awards.
Africa Youth Awards is a prestige award scheme with the prime aim of appreciating the works of young Africans in Africa and the Diaspora.
Mr Obonyo, made to the list after beating other nominees from over 141 countries in Africa. Among the young leaders who made it to the 2018 list are, Bobi Wine of Uganda, Mo Salah (Egypt), Sadio Mane, (Senegal), Davido Adeleke (Nigeria), Alikiba (Tanzania) among others.
Mr Obonyo has initiated various youth and community development projects in Korogocho slums, where he grew up. These include the Miss Koch Girls Education Initiative, Koch FM, the Youth Congress of Kenya, the Kenya Youth Media, and the Obonyo Foundation among others. Also, he’s the co-chair of the Advisory Board of the Pan Africa Youth Project hosted by African Leadership Institute.
Today, Obonyo is one of the leading voices on youth and public policy related issues in Africa and beyond. He has attracted the attention of the United Nations agencies, the African Union and the World Bank in addressing challenges facing the youth in Kenya, Africa and the rest of the world.
The President of Africa Youth Awards, Prince Akpah explained how Mr Obonyo is an excellent example of young progressive leaders propelling Africa forward.
“Your works and pursuit towards the development and image of Africa have earned you an honorable spot” He said.
“It is great and exciting that young people across Africa are inspired by your exceptional leadership and works and are recognizing you for an amazing achievement in your career” he added
Mr Obonyo called on the new generation of Africans to provide the much-needed selfless, bold and visionary leadership, and to give their talents and service to the continent.
