Rotavirus vaccine to be offered for free
By KBC Reporter
The government has now categorized the Rotavirus vaccine as mandatory and will avail it at all public health facilities.
The vaccine will be offered free to all children aged six weeks old at public health facilities.
The Rotavirus Vaccine prevents diarrhoea in children, a major cause of hospitalization and even death.
In children under the age of five years globally, nearly one in five deaths is caused by diarrhoea.
In Kenya it is estimated that at least 27,000 children die each year as a result of dehydration since the child loses a lot of fluid during diarrhoea.
The first dose of the vaccine will be given at six weeks and the second dose at ten weeks.
The vaccine that has been out of reach for many owing to cost will now be available following the support of World Health Organization, UNICEF and other partners.
The vaccine will be introduced during the national infant routine immunization that starts Tuesday.
