Rugby: ‘Lionesses’ to participate in IRB qualifiers

The four winners of the quarterfinals will earn automatic qualification to the Women’s Sevens World Series (FILE)

The Kenya women’s rugby sevens team, popularly known as ‘The Lionesses’ are among 12 teams that will take part in the  qualifying tournament for the 2014-15 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series slated for the 12th -13th September  in Hong Kong.

With four places up for grabs in next season’s series, the 12-team qualifying tournament is  set to be a cracker with Japan, China, South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina among other teams  all aiming  for a place at the top of the  table.

The format of the tournament is based on three groups of four teams each with the top two from each pool, alongside two best third-placed teams progressing to the quarter-final stage.

The four winners of the quarterfinals will earn automatic qualification to the Women’s Sevens World Series.

The qualifiers will join core teams New Zealand, Australia, Russia, England, Spain, USA and Canada, with one more team invited to participate in the 12-team series.
