Sawe wins world junior title

Kenyans have now won nine out of the 15 world junior 1500 metres finals (File)

Jonathan Kiplimo Sawe became the eighth Kenyan man to win the world junior 1500 metres title when he kicked away from his team-mate Hillary Cheruiyot Ngetich on the homestretch to reach the finish in 3 minutes and 40.02 seconds.

Ngetich, the silver medallist in 2012, was overhauled by Djibouti’s Abdi Waiss Mouhyadin for silver in 3 minutes and 41.38 seconds while Ngetich finished third in 3 minutes 41.61 seconds.

Kenyans have now won nine out of the 15 world junior 1500 metres finals.

Margaret Nyairera Wambui won the 800 metres finals in a time of 2 minutes and 0.49 seconds to claim Kenya’s fourth junior title in the race.

Lilian Kasait Rengeruk finished second in the women’s 3000 metres behind Mary Cain of united States who won the race in a time of 8 minutes, 58.48 seconds. Valentina Chepkwemoi Mateiko of Kenya was third.
