Zanzibar beats Tanzania to top group ‘A’



Zanzibar came from behind to beat fellow countrymen Tanzania 2-1 in their second match of the 2017 Cecafa senior challenge tournament at the Machakos Stadium.

The team now tops group ‘A’ with 6 points, and will play Kenya’s Harambee stars who now lie second on 4 points, in their third game this Saturday.

Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro stars needed a point to keep alive their chances of advancing to the knockout phase after drawing with Libya in their opening game.

Zanzibar on the other hand defeated Amavubi stars of Rwanda  3-1 in their opener on Tuesday this week.

Tanzania went ahead through Himid Mao’s strike in the 28th minute, leading 1-0 by the end of the first half.

Zanzibar who were re-energized in the second half, equalized through Kassim Kahmis in the 66th minute then scored the winning goal in the 78 minute through Ibrahim Ahmada.

Zanzibar now top Group A after winning two matches so far and are closely followed by hosts Kenya on four points from two matches.

In other matches Rwanda were held to a barren draw by Libya while Burundi defeated Ethiopia 4-1  to top group ‘B’ on 4 points.

National soccer Harambee stars returns to action on Saturday hoping to beat Zanzibar to qualify for the quarter final matches.

The team coached by the newly appointed coach, Paul Put is out to reclaim the Cecafa senior challenge title they last won in 2013, when the annual event was hosted here in Nairobi.

On Friday, defending champions Uganda Cranes will take on South Sudan. The Cranes need to win the games to enhanced their chances of making it to the quarter finals after being held to a barren draw by Burundi in their opening game.
