Written By:Joseph Maiyo/KNA   , Posted: Fri, Jul 02, 2004

One hundred and thirty seven (137) bags of maize stored at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot at Kitale has been declared as unfit for human consumption. The consignment which was destined for famine victims in Turkana disrtrict was discovered by public health officers from Kitale municipality who were carrying out routine inspection of all food stores in the town. On inspecting the maize, the Kitale municipal council acting chief Public Health Officer, Mr. Festus Anaya found the maize to be extensively infested with weevils and moulds. Consequently Mr. Anaya moved to court seeking authority to declare the maize inconsumable. Granting the authority, a Kitale senior resident magistrate, Mrs. M.C. Chapsaba ordered that the consignment to be confiscated and destroyed. The discovery of the contaminated grains comes in the wake of numerous deaths in Ukambani emanating from the consumption of contaminated maize.
