Peru's justice minister resignsWritten By:Joseph Maiyo/BBC , Posted: Sun, Jul 18, 2004
Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has announced that Justice Minister Baldo Kresalja has resigned.
Mr. Toledo said Baldo Kresalja offered his resignation because he opposed a new law regulating the broadcast media.
Mr. Kresalja was against the fact that the law allows up to 40% foreign ownership of Peru's radio and television stations.
The resignation comes at a difficult time for President Toledo, whose approval rating is below 10%.
Mr Toledo is struggling to rebuild his credibility after losing several ministers in corruption scandals.
The outgoing minister also said that the law relies too heavily on self-regulation at a time when many of Peru's media tycoons are involved in corruption scandals linked to the former President, Alberto Fujimori. |
