Kenya seed criticized Written By:Agatha Katheu , Posted: Thu, Aug 19, 2004
Trade and Industry assistant Minister Zaddock Syongoh is accusing the Kenya Seed Company of contributing to low agricultural yields by selling old seed varieties to farmers.
Syongo observed that though the state controlled seed company had developed a seed variety that could yield 50 bags of maize per acre, it was still insisting on selling to farmers low yield maize seed varieties that has a maximum potential of 25 bags of maize per acre.
The assistant Minister called for urgent intervention by the Ministry of Agriculture saying the trend had led to decreased maize harvest yields by both large scale and small scale farmers countrywide.
Syongo made the remarks when he officially inaugurated a business fair for Maize growers at Lesiolo Grain Handlers Limited in Nakuru.
The Minister said that the low yields in grain production in the country could have been caused by uncertified seeds, expensive low quality fertilizers, and lack of credit facilities to farmers and poor extension services.
He stated his Ministry would put in place proper policies that will facilitate post-harvest commercial handling, processing and trade in maize and its final derivatives.
