'Miracle babies': Doctor goes in hiding

Written By:Ondeko Aura   , Posted: Fri, Aug 20, 2004

Police in Nairobi are searching for the doctor purportedly behind the 13 miracle babies at the center of child trafficking allegations facing a UK based Kenyan preacher, Gildbert Deya. The doctor who runs three clinics in Huruma and Dandora Estates is reported to have switched off his mobile phone and gone underground moments after speaking to officials of the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board who raided his facilities. He denied owning the clinics. Three employees at the clinics were arrested and the facilities closed after it was discovered that they were operating without a license. Bishop Deya has vehemently denied allegations of child trafficking which were sparked off by a BBC documentary questioning his powers to help barren women and those who have attained the age of menopause conceive. Two days ago, police took samples from 13 so called miracle babies for DNA tests to ascertain their parentage. They arrested a Komarock couple which claims to have gotten the babies after Deya’s spiritual intervention.
