Foreign Affairs Minister, Ali Chirau Mwakwere has been taken to court over his handling of the matter involving three Kenyans being held hostage in Iraq. A Non-Governmental Organisation calling itself, Public Corruption Ethics and Governance Watch wants permission to prosecute the minister in a private capacity. The NGO through its chairman, Charles Ndungu today obtained summons from Nairobi Chief Magistrate, Aggrey Muchelule requiring the minister to attend court on September 1st when the application will be heard. The lobby group which has filed three charges against the minister says that the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General have failed to prosecute Mwakwere for giving false information to Kenyans. The first charge says that the minister neglected his official duty by announcing the three hostages had been released without confirming the matter. He is further accused of abusing his office by issuing false allegations. The third charge claims he disobeyed his statutory duty by failing to apologise to Kenyans even after confirming that the hostages had not been released.
