MPs vow to reject anti-tobacco bill Written By:Graham Kirwa , Posted: Sat, Nov 20, 2004
Over 20 members of parliament are meeting in Mombasa to lobby for the rejection of the proposed Anti-Tobacco bill.
The bill, which seeks to regulate advertisement and sale of Tobacco products, has elicited discontent from various parties.
The lobbyists say the bill is a threat to the future of the tobacco industry, which nets an estimated 10 billion shillings annually.
They claim that thousands of jobs associated directly or indirectly with the industry may be lost.
The lobbyist argue that some tobacco farmers have depended on the crop for their survival and if the bill is enacted it would deprive them of their source of livelihood.
Sources say all members of parliament from tobacco growing areas are attending the retreat and are lobbying alongside some other interested parties.
Among key government officials already at the retreat include Assistant Ministers, Mutua Katuka, Dunson Mungata and Wilfred Machage. |
