Committee formed to review oil prices Written By:Tom Indimuli , Posted: Thu, Dec 02, 2004
A stakeholders committee has been formed to review the pricing structure in the oil industry.
Energy Minister Simeon Nyachae disclosed Wednesday the move had been necessitated by persistent complaints from consumers of exploitation by the multi national companies.
He said the team comprising of officials from his ministry, the Petroleum Institute of East Africa and representatives of players in the industry is expected to present a report on how consumers can be protected.
Consumers have accused players in the oil industry of increasing pump prices beyond the margins effected in the international crude prices.
They also stand accused of failing to reduce local oil prices to margins commensurate with the international market.
Pump prices rose to an all time high last month hitting 75 shillings a litre amid rising demand internationally.
Local pump prices have now been adjusted to 70 shillings following a 10 percent drop in international crude oil prices. |
