Busia plane crash was negligence

Written By:Muya Murage   , Posted: Sun, Jan 23, 2005

The Busia air crash in 2003 in which cabinet minister Ahmed Khalif died was a result of negligence by owners of the plane, a report released Friday says. The report of a public inquiry into accident was released today by Transport permanent secretary Gerrishon Ikiara. The plane on January 24 2002 shook the nation coming barely a month after the newly elected Narc government took over power. In the ill-fated plane were four cabinet ministers, several assistant ministers legislators and other prominent Kenyans. The group was coming from a homecoming celebration for Vice president Moody Awori. Labour minister Ahmed Khalif and two crew members were killed in the crash and his colleagues Tuju, Karua and Kilimo seriously injured. Friday, transport permanent secretary Gerrishon Ikiara sought to reveal the findings of a public inquiry into the accident. A member of the inquiry led by lawyer Lee Muthoga maintained that they were not out to point fingers at anyone over the cause of the accident. But the report indicts the owners of the plane, African Commuter Services. It says the flight was negligently planned and carelessly executed. According to a member of the inquiry team Captain Joe Mule, the airline’s chief pilot admitted to the inquiry that it was practically impossible to execute a successful take off from Busia in that particular type of plane given the load it had. One of the passengers Dr Wanjiru Kihoro, wife to former Nyeri MP Wanyiri Kihoro is still in a coma at a Nairobi hospital. Ikiara said the government had already implemented some of the recommendations of the report.
