Kenyans to pay more for electricityWritten By:Millicent Awour , Posted: Thu, Oct 27, 2005
Kenyans will continue paying highly for electricity even with a new retail electricity tariff policy guideline released Thursday.
The Executive Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Board –ERB Matere Keriri says the policy to be reviewed after every three years will be pegged on the financial integrity of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company.
KPLC is currently undertaking a major systems improvement funded by the world bank to the tune of 20 billion shillings.
The power company is expected to reduce its operating costs and cut down system losses currently standing at 400 million shillings annually.
Speaking to the press , Matere said any proposed change in the tariff schedule will be controlled by KPLC, the government or the Electricity regulatory board.Tariff reviews were last made in 1999.
According to the new policy, the time of use metering, suspended in the year 2000 will be re-introduced.
The automatic adjustment of tariffs, usually affected by oil costs and foreign exchange fluctuations will be retained.
