Shun violence, incitement - Wekesa

Written By:KBC Reporter   , Posted: Sun, Oct 30, 2005

An assistant minister for livestock Dr. Noah Wekesa has cautioned his fellow politicians against making inflammatory statements during the referendum campaigns saying such statements could easily cause chaos in the country. Dr. Wekesa further appealed to Kenyans in general to avoid violence at all cost noting that the country has been peaceful for the last forty two years of independence. He observed that Kenya will remain as one country despite the out come of the eagerly awaited referendum . The National rainbow coalition mp who has been leading the Middle ground group which was calling for the postponement of the referendum date called on wananchi to view the divergent views as signs of democracy and not enmity. He said his group comprised of moderate kenyans who did not want the constitution to divide the country along ethnic lines. Dr. Wekesa who now supports the Yes (banana) group said both the NO and YES groups have valid points for either supporting or opposing the Wako draft hence they should be allowed to campaign peaceful without being harassed by their opponents. He said whereas the wako draft was not without problems it was difficult to get a constitution that is hundred percent perfect. He cautioned the people against allowing politicians to lead them astray adding that it appeared the political class has lost the way in the referendum. He called on parents not allow their youth to be misused by politicians to cause chaos in their opponents campaign meetings saying if the politicians were genuine they wouldput put their sons and daughters in the frontline before asking other people's children to cause violence.. On Agriculture the assistant minister who was speaking during the Hortifair Kenya 2005 in Eldoret town, called on farmers in the north rift region to form cooperative marketing societies to help them market their farm produce and avoid being fleeced by middlemen. He observed that farmers in other regions of the country are using cooperative societies to acquire inputs as well as marketing their produce which has discouraged middlemen who buy their produce at throw away prices. He said the farmers would use their bargaining power to sell their produce at market prices if they form cooperative societies. Uasin Gishu district officer one Mr. Ochillo Oyugi said there was great untapped horticultural potential in the north rift region which need to be harnessed. He challenged the Fresh produce association of Kenya (FPEAK) to aggressively sensitize the local farmers on the need to venture into horticulture. He said the presence of the Eldoret International Air port is an added asset to the horticulture industry as producers can easily export their produce to Europe and Asia through the airport. He said at the moment cargo planes from Dubai land at the airport but leave empty due to lack of cargo from the region. This he observed is uneconomical and needs to be change urgently. The Chairman of FPEAK Mr. Hasit Shah said the strong shilling against major world currencies and high unregulated fuel prices were hurting the local producers and called on the government to urgently address the issues.
