Govt to develop policy on IVF

Written By:Catherine Atundi   , Posted: Tue, May 16, 2006

The Government plans to set up a task force to formulate a policy framework to guide the practice of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Test tube babies the Director of Medical Services Dr. James Nyikal said on Monday. The move follows key concern including moral and ethical issues arising from the recent birth of two test tubes babies in Kenya. Although the Minister of Health Charity Ngilu welcomed the news of the first test tube babies in Kenya last week, the Ministry has now set in motion plans to regulate the procedure called IVF technology. The Director of Medical Services Dr. James Nyikal says the birth of the two test tube babies has now moved the technology from basic research to application therefore raising several moral and ethical questions. He said a technical taskforce will be established to come up with legislation that will regulate the practice of IVF and other assisted reproduction technologies. The Committee will comprise of officials from the Ministry of Health, Regulatory Authorities such as the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board, Research Institution, Universities, the Attorney General Office and Faith Based Institutions. Nyikal says medical practitioners such as Dr. Joshua Noreh the pioneer of the test tube babies should continue to operate under the existing general medical code of conduct and regulations. Infertility remains a key concern in Kenya and the cost of assisted fertilization such as test tube babies is out of the reach of many Kenyans.
