Appeal court condemns electoral violenceWritten By:Vincent Lempaa , Posted: Fri, Jul 21, 2006
The court of appeal has decried the violence that was witnessed during the Nairobi mayoral elections.
Appellate Judges Emmanuel Okubasu, Onyango Otieno and William Deverell regretted the incident comparing it to the one that involved Somali delegates in a Nairobi Hotel in the year 2004.
They called for discipline among the civil leaders to avoid such incidences.
City councilors Wednesday turned the election of the mayoral into a pandemonium while a faction opposed to the mayor Dick Wathika hauled chairs at Chatter hall in Nairobi. Several people were injured in the commotion.
Meanwhile the court of appeal has condemn the Attorney general for failing to turn up for the hearing of a case in which Mombassa Mayor Taib Ali Taib is challenging the revocation of his nomination by the minister of Local Government.
The judges said that it was unfortunate for the office of the AG not to attend for a case of such importance.
Following the incident, the Mombassa mayoral election were suspended further after the court extended the orders baring anybody from holding the election before the case is determined by the court.
Taib’s Nomination was revoked in February this year and upheld by the High Court in April this year. |
