Uncircumcised boys saga, Headteacher to face disciplinary action

Written By:Carol Gakii   , Posted: Tue, Feb 13, 2007

Education minister George Saitoti says action will be taken against a Meru head teacher who sent home twenty students for not being circumcised.

Addressing a press conference Tuesday after receiving a 30 million shillings grant from the Japanese government Saitoti termed the act as primitive and unacceptable.

The minister said the Kiriani High School head teacher acted irresponsibly saying that such a rite of passage is not mandatory or a requirement for admission in any school.

The schoolteacher sent the parent's letters asking them to ensure their sons undergo the cut before they can be re-admitted.

Meanwhile eight schools will benefit from the 30 million shillings grant given to fund aimed at improving infrastructure.

Japanese ambassador to Kenya Satoru Miyamura said the schools drawn from Nyanza, Nairobi and Western were identified as most needy, among many other that submitted proposals for funding.

Saitoti said the government of Kenya appreciates the help it has received from various development partners in funding the Free Primary Education which has so far seen primary enrollment increase to over 7.7 million.
