As the Sixth Extra-Ordinary Summit of the East African Community - EAC begins Monday in Arusha, Tanzanians have rejected the plan for the East African political federation.
According to Tanzania's Minister of East African Cooperation, 76 per cent of the public objected to the plan for fast-tracking the political integration.
The Heads of state meeting is set to discuss a Progress Report on the National Consultations on the Process of Fast Tracking the Establishment of the East African Political Federation.
At the same time, the leaders will deliberate on a Report on the EAC Position on Negotiations of the Economic Partnership Agreement - EPAs with the European Union.
The five EAC Heads of State, President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi are expected to attend the Summit.
Tanzania's decision comes at a time when the East African Community has been expanded with the entry of Rwanda and Burundi.
