Foreign donors to restore tourism glory

Written By:Bernard Ndong   , Posted: Mon, Apr 14, 2008

The Tourism industry requires at least 1.5 billion shillings to recover from the effects of post election violence.

Speaking in his office, Tourism minister Najib Balala said the sector needs a revamp to raise it to the level it was by the end of 2007 contributing over 66 billion shillings to the economy.

The tourism sector is on its to recovery following the massive campaigns that the sector players have launched in the recent past.

The sector lost up to 5.5 billion shillings in revenue due to the political unrest during the months of January and February this year.

Speaking on his first day in office, Balala lauded the initiatives but admitted the industry still had a long way to go.

He appealed to foreign donors to aid in restoring the sector's glory.

The minister however cited bureaucracy as a major impediment on acquiring foreign investments and promised to make it his priority to change the bureaucracies.

He further expressed his commitment towards eradicating poverty through tourism; one of the Key goals of the country's vision 2030.
