IDPs hold demo

Written By:Diana Okemwa   , Posted: Sat, Jul 26, 2008

Over 2000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camping at the Naivasha Stadium took to the streets on Saturday demanding for the release of the body of one of their own who died after allegedly consuming a lethal herbal drink.

The irate IDPs who accused the Naivasha District Hospital management of refusing to release the body of the refugee for burial camped at the facility for hours paralyzing operations.

They claimed the hospital had delayed carrying out a post mortem on the body two weeks after the man's death.

Their action seemed to have borne fruit as they were later allowed to take the body for burial.

The government had pledged to cater for the burial expenses including transportation to the Naivasha cemetery.

The victim died after taking the herbs after he reportedly fell ill.

The self declared "doctor" who prepared the herbs was arrested soon after the man died.

The IDPs claimed they have resorted to taking the herbs as they cannot afford to pay for medical treatment at the district hospital.
