Residents of Nyahururu north district were treated to a rare occurrence, when a heavy down pour of snow hit the area leaving a massive block of snow that covered a large expanse of land.

The Meteorological Department however explains that a heavy cloud blown from the Congo basin that froze once it approached the Nyandarua area caused the large snow.

Gathanji village in Nyandarua North district, and the residents here too could not believe their eyes after it begun to snow at 2.pm with the snow covering over 200 hectares of land.

The peculiar incident was followed by whirlwind and thunderstorm before darkness engulfed the area forcing the residents to flee to their houses for cover.

Joseph Mwaura who was among several herdsman grazing their livestock was among those counting losses after over 100 herds of sheep and 20 cows went missing .

Director of Meteorological Services Joseph Mukabana explains that,

" A warm and moist incursion of Congo air mass from Western part of the country pumped into relatively cool Southeasterly winds from the Indian Ocean. The large temperature difference resulted into rapid humidification of air"

The department says it is also closely monitoring the Kericho, Nandi Hills and Mount Elgon areas.

The Nyandarua residents were left in both awe and shock, as they could not comprehend the happenings.
