President Mwai Kibaki has reassured wananchi that the Government is doing everything possible to provide food to all Kenyans.
The President said the Government is also putting in place mechanisms for enhanced production of food to feed the citizens and have surplus for the market.
He said the Government will also import more maize to alleviate the prevailing shortage of the commodity.
President Kibaki made the remarks Friday at Kenyatta International Conference Centre where he received and flagged off relief food donated by the Egyptian Government.
He thanked the Egyptian Government for the generous donation of 183 metric tonnes of assorted foodstuff worth over Ksh 10 million.
"This donation will go a long way in supplementing my government's efforts to provide food to the needy people in the regions hardest hit by the current drought," President Kibaki said.
The President, once again, appealed to development partners and well-wishers to assist the Government in addressing the food situation in the country.
The Head of State noted with satisfaction that Kenya and Egypt have enjoyed cordial relations over the years, adding that the Government of Egypt has been responsive to Kenyans during difficult times.
President Kibaki said his Government looked forward to strengthening the relations between Kenya and Egypt for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries.
On his part, the Egyptian Ambassador to Kenya Saher Hamsa gave the assurance that his Government will not spare any effort in promoting the existing cordial relations between his country and Kenya.
He expressed confidence that his Government's food donation will help those affected by famine and drought in Kenya.
Special Programmes Minister Dr. Naomi Shaaban said the food donation from the Egyptian Government will be sent to Kyuso, Kieni, Malindi and Kinango.
She further thanked the Egyptian Government for assisting in drilling of boreholes in some of the country's arid and semi-arid districts.
