Oil scarcity hits Mombasa

Written By:O'Brien Kimani   , Posted: Mon, Mar 09, 2009

A crippling fuel shortage has hit the coastal city of Mombasa with motorists driving around for hours in a desperate search for the commodity.

The city center is the worst hit with a shortage of super and regular petrol being reported.

A spot check by KBC found long queues of angry motorists lining for hours at pump stations where the commodity was available.

Efforts to get a comment from Kenya Oil Refineries Pipeline were futile.

The crisis hits Mombasa ahead of an important East Africa petroleum conference in the city.

Disillusioned motorists expressed their anger claiming fuel shortage at the Coastal town has become too common.

Early this year the coastal town was in the picture again following the scarcity of the product causing uproar among the residents.

The town oil is supplied by KPRL and other oil marketers.

Meanwhile offloading of the government imported fertilizer continued for the second day Monday.

The shipment weighing more than 30 thousand tonnes is expected to be fully offloaded from MV Achilles by Friday this week.

The subsidized commodity will be transported to Kenya Cereals and Produce Board to be distributed to farmers in the country.
