As the hunger situation becomes more desperate in parts of the country a herdsman was allegedly hacked to death by another at Kawop location in Samburu North after a quarrel over water.

Acting Samburu  OCPD Osbon Mwawaza said the two herdsmen had quarrelled over whose animals would drink water first at a well.

The assailant was later arrested and will soon appear in court to be charged with murder, said OCPD.

Water in some parts of the country has become a rare commodity in parts of the country as rivers and dams dry up folowing proloned drought.

Meanwhile the train carrying food donation to hunger stricken families is expected to arrive in Mombasa Saturday night.

The train dubbed 'Mercy Train' laden with over 17 million shillings worth of food made stopovers on the way, distributing food to hungry families.

The train which was flagged off by Special Programmes Minister Naomi Shaaban, made its first  stop in Olu town where hungry but  elated residents scrambled to get food rations as thedistribution exercise began.

In Nairobi, inmates from the Langata Women Prison have joined in the campaign to help the starving Kenyans.

Inmates from the facility visited Nyumba ya Wazee home for the elederly where they donated food items which were a contribution from the prisoners and staff of the prison.

The Officer in Charge of the prison Grace Odhiambo said the inmates sacrificed their own food in order to contribute to the appeal to asist the hunger stricken families across the country.

Odhiambo said prisoners are also part of the society and appealed to Kenyans to stop ostracising them and instead welcome them back into the society once they are released.

And in Igembe district, boys from Njia secondary school have also heeded the call to help the hungry.

The boys skipped some meals and accumulated 17 bags of maize in three weeks, which they distributed to close to 300 members of the community facing starvation.

The school principal David Baariu said the students have agreed to constinue skipping meals and denying themselves other luxuries in order to contribute to the famine kitty.

The Kenya Red Cross society says upto ten million Kenyans are starving, but the new figures to be released are likely to rise.

"The government is supposed to release new figures this week which I am sure will be in excess of 2.3 - 2.5 million people," Secretary General Abbas Gullet Mr Gullet explained.
