Water and Irrigation minister, Charity Ngilu, has described the water crisis in the country as a national problem that requires a national solution.
Speaking during the official launch of the Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF) 2008-2013 Strategic Plan and Service Delivery Charter, the minister said that there had been mistakes on management of water resources but it wasn't too late to start a recovery programme.
She called upon all stakeholders to unite and address water conservation, tree planting, famine and food for all for sustainable development because there can not be any meaningful economic activity without water.
The minister said that the government budget and donor assistance should be increased to achieve the Millennium Development Goals or Vision 2030 Mid term Goal of increasing access to water.
WSTF CEO , Jacqueline Musyoki, said that the fund hopes to utilize sh.10 billion by 2030 for 1,127 projects, 605 in the rural areas, 160 in the urban low-income areas and 362 for water resources management.
She said that the strategic plan intends to provide access to water to about 6.4 million people.
Also present during the launch was minister of State for Planning and National Development and Vision 2030, Wycliffe Oparanya, minister for Fisheries, Dr. Otuoma and minister for Medical Services, Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o.
