The government has no plans to expand or put up public universities, Science and Technology, Minister Dr. Sally Kosgey has said.
Speaking during a tour of Mount Kenya University (MKU), in Thika west District, Dr. Kosgey said the limited resources in the country and economical constraints cannot allow the expansion of the existing public universities or even construction of more.
She commended the role played by private universities of supplementing government efforts of providing higher education to qualified students unable to join public campuses.
She particularly hailed universities like Mt. Kenya that have initiated crucial courses in technical field.

The minister said the future of the global village, depends on professionals with technical skills such as those offered by Mt. Kenya University.
She said Mt. Kenya University has excellent facilities and urged students to make good use of them.
She called on public universities to start income generating projects that would not compromise education standards.
She said the government could not stop exodus of students to other countries as this was their democratic right.
She said like anywhere in the world no government can accommodate all eligible students in public universities.
