Sambili: Wario's reinstatement final

Written By:Ziporah Njeri   , Posted: Tue, Nov 10, 2009

Youth and Sports affairs minister Hellen Sambili says her decision to reinstate Umuro Wario as chief executive of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund is final.

Sambili argues that the issue has been overly politicized and is now calling on the board to lend Wario the necessary support.

The Minister who has also faced a rebellion from her two assistant Ministers said the issue has become politicized.

Differences between the Minister and her assistants came into fore when they openly accused her of working in isolation, but Sambili says party issues should not work to derail her ministry's performance.

Wario who was suspended by the Youth enterprise fund board in March, had cited vendetta from the board saying his problems stemmed out of his quest to block unethical practices in the management of the fund.

Meanwhile, MPs are now calling for the removal of the board of directors over allegations of impropriety.

At a press conference at Parliament Tuesday, the MPs led by Kamukunji legislator Simon Mbugua supported the reinstatement of the fund's chief executive officer to the leadership of the fund and asked for the removal of the board.

Mr Mbugua said a report of the Auditor and Controller General for the first year of the fund's existence had established that Sh250 million had been looted from the youth fund since its inception, all at the behest of the board.

He did not have a copy of the auditor's report but said it would be presented to Parliament in three weeks' time at which point it will become open to scrutiny.

He said Mr Wario had been cleared by KACC, Youth Affairs minister Prof Helen Sambili, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Head of the Civil Service Francis Muthaura and therefore needed to come back to the fund.
