Written By:Wangari Kanyongo   , Posted: Fri, Nov 20, 2009

The government has vowed not to rest till the conflict in Isiolo that left 11 people dead last week is resolved internal security minister George Saitoti has said.

Saitoti attributed the attacks to a cartel of traders supplying arms to cattle rustles.

He said investigations had established that the attack was well planned and executed as the rustlers targeted 4,000 livestock

Speaking during the consultative meeting for peace and security forum for Mps from arid and semi arid areas, the minister attributed cattle rustling to drought and proliferation of small arms.

Eastern provincial police officer Macus Ochola has confirmed that investigations into the killings are in full gear adding that police have arrested a few suspects and recovered some firearms.

His sentiments were echoed by Kenya National commission on Human Rights officers who have launched an independent investigation.

Human Rights officers visiting the area said extensive disarmament operation has been ordered in the whole region to ensure that some communities are not vulnerable to others.

The regular police, the AP, and the anti stock theft squad have teamed up for the exercise.

Leaders in Isiolo however feel they have not been involved in resolving the crisis.

Isiolo North MP Mohammed Kuti pointed an accusing finger at the district- security committee for laxity and advocated for disarmament in the whole region.

11 people were murdered in the area when a neighboring community attacked last week. Several others are nursing injuries at the Isiolo district hospital.

Elsewhere, agriculture minister William Ruto has sued the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights for adversely mentioning him in connection with the post election violence.

Ruto, through his lawyer Katwa Kigen claims that the Commission acted unreasonably by implicating him in planning, financing and perpetrating post election violence between December 2007 and February 2008.

The minister claimed that the commission did not give him a hearing before mentioning him adversely.

Ruto further says that the Commission did not have jurisdiction to collect evidence and mention him adversely.

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has also sued the commission seeking to quash the report and expunge his name from the report.
