Leader calls for sobriety

A section of political leaders are now calling for sobriety as Kenyans scrutinize the harmonized draft constitution to avoid a stalemate.

Runyenjes MP Cecil Mbarire cautioned her political colleagues against personalizing the constitution debate to avoid a repeat of the 2005 referendum.

Industrialization assistant minister Nderitu Mureithi urged Kenyans to take the document seriously as it will guarantee key fundamental rights and a better future for youth in the country.

Meanwhile, the Director of Information Ezekiel Mutua has lauded the harmonized draft constitution for its clauses relating to the media.

Mutua said Article 51 of the just released draft if adopted will bestow the media freedom of expression and urged stakeholders to give their views on it.

Mutua was speaking in Naivasha at the close of a media training workshop.

Mutua also announced partnership with the Kenya Information Communication Technology Board to set up 24 information resource centers across the country with a view of promoting information communications.

Elsewhere, Kenyans have been asked to read and understand the draft constitution and air their views to the Committee of Experts to avoid what happened on 2005.

Speaking at Tambach Teachers' college after chairing Board Meeting former cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott said Kenyans need to be careful and ensure politicians do not mislead them to reject the document because of their selfish political motives.

He said that in 2005 referendum some politicians misled Kenyans to vote against the draft constitution by misrepresenting facts and quoting some non existing sections to outwink them to believe the draft was so bad.

Mr. Biwott urged that local vernacular FM stations to translate the draft properly to the illiterate in society to ensure everyone was part and parcel of the constitution making process.

The former Keiyo south Mp was optimistic the constitution making process which has taken over twenty years to be realized will this time be achieved and asked politicians to iron out the few contentious sections.

He said that one month period set aside for wananchi to read and make their contributions enough.
